About Chongqing Urban Area

The main urban area of Chongqing comprises several districts: Yuzhong, Jiangbei, Nan’an, Jiulongpo, Shapingba, Dadukou, Beibei, Yubei, and Banan. Within these vibrant districts, you’ll discover iconic attractions such as Hongya Cave, Ciqikou (Porcelain Port), and the Great Hall of the People, along with major commercial centers and shopping malls.

Chongqing’s urban area is densely populated and bustling with commerce and heavy traffic, making it an excellent place to experience the city’s dynamic atmosphere.

Getting There

By Train: The urban area is served by three major railway stations: Chongqing West Railway Station, Chongqing East Railway Station, and Chongqing North (Chongqing Bei) Railway Station. Arriving by high-speed train is the most convenient option.

By Flight: Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport (CKG) is situated in the urban area and consists of three terminals: Terminal 1, Terminal 2, and Terminal 3. Terminal 3B is currently under construction and is expected to open soon. If you’re arriving from outside China, you will land in Terminal 3. Domestic flights may arrive in either Terminal 2 or Terminal 3. Please check with your airline for specifics. The airport is approximately 21 km north of the city center.

Things to Know

• Transportation: Chongqing boasts a comprehensive transit system that includes buses, the metro, and taxis. Avoid traveling during peak hours, typically from 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM, to minimize delays.
• Beware of Vendors: Avoid purchasing the red fruits sold by vendors in tourist hotspots like Hongya Cave. Although they claim to be local specialties, these fruits are often made with dyes and artificial flavors, which can be harmful to your health.
• Taxi Safety: Do not take unmetered vehicles. If you need a taxi, use a reputable ride-hailing app or a metered taxi.
• Ignore Illegal Offers: You may encounter individuals offering rides at major tourist spots, including the airport and train stations. Ignore these offers, as they are not legal. Instead, opt for the bus, metro, or a yellow metered taxi. Ride-sharing services like Didi (嘀嘀打车) are also available.
• Scam Awareness: If a monk approaches you for money, it’s best to ignore them, as they may be scammers.
